Audrey Van Scharen

Manager Ethics, Vrije Universiteit Brussel/UZ Brussel

Audrey Van Scharen is Ethics and Research Manager at the University Hospital Brussels and vice-chair of its Medical Ethics Committee. She holds degrees in Political Science and Law from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), where she also teaches Bioethics and Ethics in Research. With a strong background in data protection, she helped implement GDPR at VUB and served as Data Protection Officer for the National Belgian Councils of Doctors and Pharmacists.

Audrey has been actively involved in ethics evaluations under the CTR, MDR, and IVDR. Her PhD research, “The Sense and Nonsense of the Role Attributed to Medical Research Ethics Committees,” explores how ethics committees assess innovative biomedical research. She combines hands-on experience with academic insight to improve legal compliance, ethical reflection, and governance in healthcare and research.
